Getting Sick and Writing a Story

It happened in May 2009.

I found myself sick with measles. I was advised to stay away from the office for about 2-3 weeks, just to ensure that I will not spread the itchy malady to my office mates. And so I was simply by myself in my small bachelor’s pad (I was still living the single life then), waiting until measles would leave me.

With apparently much time in my hands, I got restless and bored. I read, ate, slept, read again, prayed and then played computer games. It was in this setting when I found myself attempting to write a short story. And so “Grieving” was born. Yes, that’s the title of my first attempt to write and actually finish a story in English (Cebuano is my first language). And then I thought of getting feedback on what I wrote so I sent a copy of my story via email to one of my literary mentors. Surprise, surprise! ย She told me that my story would be included in this new anthology of short stories (in Cebuano and English) that was being put together. That’s how “Grieving” became part of a book ๐Ÿ™‚ ย The book: Babayeng Sugid, Cebu Stories was published by Anvil in 2011 and has been available in National Bookstore.

Since then, I haven’t really finished my latest attempts to write another fictional piece. No, I don’t think I have to get sick again to write some more stories but I am reminded that time, focused time is needed to finish writing a piece or finishing a specific task ๐Ÿ™‚
