Do you want to make-over your home but don’t know where to start? Do you have a minefield of ideas but little concept of how to evolve them? Ready to sell your house and need to stage it? If so, then you will probably benefit from the help of an interior designer.
However, hiring help isn’t always necessary and may turn out to be an expense you could’ve reserved for your home itself.
Here are six reasons for and against hiring an interior designer, in order to help you decide if it’s the best decision for your home and your needs.
How busy are you? A full-blown interior design project is highly time-consuming, something that if you’re short on, probably means you’ll benefit from professional help.
Do you and your family agree? If everyone with a say in the matter agrees on the style and colours to be used, it might not be necessary to hire outside help.
On the other hand, if you can’t agree on whether to install pine or oak doors or choose between wallpaper and paint, you might find that hiring a professional designer is the best solution. What’s more, if you’re not happy with the results, at least you can blame an outside party rather than each other!
Are you creatively minded? The truth is that most of us are either creatively or logically minded. If you’re the latter, while you might be able to estimate the volume of a new wardrobe, you probably won’t be able to create an accurate realisation of the design ideas you’re dreaming of.
You’ll have to let go of the control: as difficult as it may be, when you let an interior designer into your home, you will have to pass the control over to them.
Of course, any designer worth their weight will ask for your opinion and input at every step of the way. However, if they say that natural oak doors won’t complement your choice of wallpaper, you will have to trust their opinion.
If you’re a bit of a control freak and unable to let someone else take over, hiring a designer probably isn’t for you.
Do you want your home to be completely unique? If so, then you’re probably better off designing it yourself.
The truth is that when you hire outside help, you have no idea how often they’ve used the same style ideas and designs. And the chances are, they will have a certain ‘template’ they work with and thus, their efforts will rarely be entirely original.
They don’t care as much about the results as you do: The truth is that you care much more about the interior design of your home than your decorator ever will. It’s obviously in their best interests to carry out their work to the best of their abilities but at the end of the day, no-one knows your likes and dislikes better than you, and no-one will care more about getting your home ‘just right’ than you will.
Whether you are decorating or selling your house you need to think wisely about how you spend your budget.
